What is Californium?

Californium is a soft, metallic radioactive element first synthesized in 1950 at the University of California at Berkeley’s Radiation Laboratory. One of its isotopes, californium-252 or Cf-252, is a powerful spontaneous emitter of neutrons. The isotope is widely used in many industries for initiating a nuclear chain reaction, oil well-logging analysis, material scanning (PGNAA and PINS) and medical applications.
